AG's finding shows eThekwini 'is collapsing' - ActionSA
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
ActionSA in eThekwini says despite an unqualified audit opinion, the state of the city's finances gives no cause for celebration.
The party has been weighing in after the auditor-general's findings revealed that eThekwini's irregular expenditure nearly doubled from the previous financial year to sit at R1.5 billion in 2021/22.
It now sits at 94% increase.
ActionSA's provincial chairperson, Zwakele Mncwango says with failing infrastructure leading to a more than 50% water loss, a total spend of just under 7% of the allocated budget and falling short of meeting set targets - the situation in eThekwini is dire.
"The findings versus the opinion is far from each other, because the findings tells you that the municipality should be getting a qualified opinion.
"eThekwini Municipality is on the brink of collapse, in fact it is collapsing because if you can't even get more than 50% of your target and if you can't spend your budget and irregular spending of above R1.5 billion that's really a challenge."
