Adhere to firework by-laws and or get fined warns Metro

Ethekwini residents have been warned to adhere to the city's fireworks bylaws, or risk facing fines.

The City urges residents to use fireworks responsibly as people welcome the new year on Friday night. 


According to the City by-laws residents have 30min between 23:45pm till 00:15am to light fireworks in the space of their own home and not on a public road. 


Metro spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says those found flouting the rules will be fined.

"Residents could face fines up to R3500 as an admission of guilt. For discharging fireworks on the roads is R1000 and the fine for discharging the fireworks is R2500." 


He also urged residents to hold peaceful celebrations and not ignite fireworks in these spaces. 


"Fireworks should be detonated away from hospitals, clinics, old age, nursing homes, animal welfare and petrol stations. Fireworks should not be pointed at any person as this is dangerous." 


"No person should ignite, discharge or explode any fireworks on a public road, residence or private dwelling without the knowledge or consent of the occupant or owner of the property. "
