Activist warns of sewage spills along some of Durban's coastlines

A local environmental activist says the sewage spills in Durban are a death sentence to the city's environment and economy.

There have been reports of more pollution in the harbour and Wilson's Wharf, as well as Durban's Golden Mile and Umhlanga beaches.
Desmond D’Sa is with the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance.
"Clearly, Durban doesn't deserve to have blue flag status and people should be aware, take the precaution because the sewage is all over. We have seen it all over the show because the sewage ducts aren't being maintained and they flushing the water out.
"We have seen it in the Durban harbour last week. We have seen it again now. This is happening on a regular basis. I just want to warn bathers, surfers, fishers to take every precaution. If you smell the sewage, please do not enter the water."
Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Hannah Winkler says government must act.
"We realise that this has consequences in terms of attracting tourism to the key hotspots in Durban.
"We do call on the minister of tourism Lindiwe Sisulu to immediately intervene, to conduct an oversight and meet with the relevant officials."
