Activist group demands stronger action against policeman's anti-islamic rant
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The Activist Movement of SA has called on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to take strong action against an officer who made a blasphemous remark, while arresting a group of Muslim worshippers in Mpumalanga.
The comment was recorded in a video posted on social media.
It shows police entering a room where around 20 worshippers were praying and ordering them to the ground. Cele says they're currently investigating the weekend incident.
He's also apologised to the Muslim community.
Visvin Reddy of AMSA says while worshippers gathering to pray during the holy month of Ramadaan is against lockdown rules, police should have handled the situation in a more respectful manner.

"We believe that the police be more sensitive and understanding especially around people's religious beliefs. The policeman who made these utterances was completely out of order."
He says they've noted allegations of the excessive use of force by officers cracking down on those breaking lockdown regulations:
"Excessive force on the part of the police is not acceptable. We'd like to see them use the same type of force when dealing with criminals, murderers, burglars, and rapists," said Reddy.
