ActionSA says its lawyers are also finalising papers as the party prepares to take the City to court over the sewerage problems.

Provincial party leader Zwakele Mncwango says municipal officials have shown no interest in fixing the sewer systems that have been affecting rivers and beaches.

He says they want the courts to compel the City to do its job.

"We wrote to them on 19 October and to date we haven't received anything from the municipality expect that they keep lying and misleading the public by saying some beaches are now clean and safe to be used by visitors."

"We had proof that on 2 November there was still sewerage running into Battery Beach, meaning it was putting many South Africans and the tourism sector at risk. So for that reason, we have now prepared to go to court."

Last week, the DA said its legal team was putting together evidence of lack of maintenance of the sewerage infrastructure in eThekwini as part of its court application.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela says the damage caused to infrastructure, including to the sewer systems, is due to natural disasters.

He says political parties need to mindful of this and stop using court challenges to score cheap political points.
