ActionSA probes mayoral candidate accused of Amcor Dam, Ncandu River contamination

ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal has launched an investigation into one of its own.
A member has been linked to the contamination of the Amcor Dam and Ncandu River in Newcastle.
Faizel Cassim, the party's mayoral candidate for the northern KwaZulu-Natal town and local laundromat owner, has been accused of filming and sharing footage of waters deliberately polluted from his business.
It's alleged Cassim pretended to be a whistleblower to boost support for the party ahead of the local government elections.
Investigations by Newcastle Municipality found that the laundry had illegally connected its stormwater drain to the municipal sewer allowing effluent to flow into the dam and river.
"His explanation is that this is just a smear campaign leading up to the 1st of November. However, because as ActionSA we subscribe to the rule of the law and we believe in ethical leadership," says ActionSA's KZN chair Makhosi Khoza
"We are of the view that now that this allegation has been made and it's a very serious allegation, we want to hear what's the investigation so that we can be able to take a decisive decision should he be found guilty."
