NPA spokesperson, Natasha Kara says the 24 and 27-year-old appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court on Friday.

They face one count of murder, two counts of rape and one count of robbery. The matter has been remanded to 14 May for a formal bail application.

Police say the pair have also been linked to another rape of a young woman.

The Sweetwaters community says the attack has angered them.

Local councillor, Sibusiso Mtshali says it's not the first time such a crime has taken place in the area.

"I can count no less than five cases where people are brutally murdered. But what is more frustrating is that nothing is being done to at least apprehend those who are committing those criminals."

"In 2014-15, there were incidents where people were murdered to current cases whereby a girl went missing and later on we found a skull."
