Abahlali condemn attacks on foreign nationals
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Shackdwellers movement, Abahlali BaseMjondolo has distanced itself from the recent attacks on foreigners in communities in and around Durban.
It's condemned the violence, that's driven families out of their homes, saying this needs to stop.
Malawian nationals at Sydenham's Burnwood Informal Settlement were threatened and attacked in their homes last week and took refuge at police stations, community halls and mosques.
Truck drivers were also targeted, on national routes.
"Although we are the Shack Dwellers Movement, we don't represent everyone that lives in a shack. We are a membership-based movement. Before becoming a member of Abahlali BaseMjondolo - you need a membership card to be part of this movement.
"So, we don't represent everyone that lives in a settlement. I can tell you that we are very proud that in all the areas we represent - you don't find these xenophobic attacks taking place," Abahlali's Mqapheli Bonono said.
