Abahlali baseMjondolo accuse political leaders of making empty promises

Shack dwellers movement Abahlali baseMjondolo has accused political leaders like President Jacob Zuma and Blade Nzimande of pretending to represent the poor while living a life of luxury.

The movement held an un-Freedom Day ceremony at the eThekwini FET College sports ground yesterday, calling on South Africans to boycott Freedom Day on Wednesday.

Abahlali's Thapelo Mohapi says thousands of shack dwellers have been promised better lives but nothing has materialised.

He feels the country has been stolen from them.

"We are the forgotten generation, we still live in shacks, we still live with rats that bite us, we still live with rats that have diseases, we still subjected to poverty but there's a lot of corruption that is taking place in this country.

"They live a luxurious life at the expense of the poor. Some of them come to the community when it's elections time and lie. They say they have something that they have to deliver to the community but they do not," he said.
