AA: Slight drop in festive season road deaths ‘no victory’
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The Automobile Association says tougher actions are needed to reduce the number of deadly crashes on the country’s roads.
Transport officials revealed on Wednesday that 1 427 were killed in collisions over the festive season.
The AA's Eleanor Mavimbela says while the country saw a decline in the number of fatal crashes compared to the previous year, these figures remain unacceptable.
"The number of deaths during the current period is 25 lower than the previous year, and we acknowledge the efforts of law enforcers to deal more effectively with road safety, but this number is still too high, and we should guard against viewing this as a victory."

"We reiterate our view that heightened law enforcement over four weeks will not result in road improved safety when the other 48 weeks of the year law enforcement is weak."
