AA: Aarto has been waste of taxpayers’ money

The Automobile Association says road traffic offences act, Aarto, has been a waste of taxpayers' money.
It believes the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act did nothing to remedy the country's road death rate.
The group's been reacting to Thursday’s ruling in the High Court in Pretoria, which declared the law unconstitutional.
The ruling has put the brakes on the mooted driving licence points demerit system.
The AA says the piece of legislation was drafted without sufficient care.
It feels going back to the drawing board - on an Act designed in the 1990s - shouldn't be an option for the government and work should start afresh.
The high court declared Aarto and its amendments unlawful after the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse lodged a legal challenge in 2020.
The Department of Transport said it is studying the judgment to decide on a possible appeal.
