A 99-year-old woman died after being hit by a truck in Shakaskraal on the north coast today.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says the woman, who was carrying her three-year-old grandson, was trying to cross the road.

"Unfortunately, all efforts were tried on scene but due to the nature of her injuries - she succumbed to her injuries. The child still remains in a critical condition and currently under the care of advance life support paramedics. They are en route to hospital," he says.

In the south of Durban, two pedestrians were killed when a vehicle crashed into in Winklespruit this morning.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says a bakkie and a car had collided on the R603 earlier with one of the vehicles going down an embankment.

"Whilst he lost control, he collided with two male pedestrians standing on the side of the road. Unfortunately when paramedics arrived, both pedestrians had suffered severe injuries and there was nothing further paramedics could do. They were declared dead on scene," he says.

Four other people were injured and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
