Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says there's still a long way to go before the country achieves a 20% decline in road-related deaths.
Presenting the 2020 preliminary festive season statistics on Tuesday, Mbalula said six provinces recorded a drop in fatalities.
KZN recorded a 3% decline, with 131 deaths compared to 135 last year.

Mbalula says the stats show that the roads were fairly busy recently, despite the Covid-19 resurgence.
"It is regrettable that 690 people lost their lives on our roads over the period from 1 - 20 December 2020 compared to 732 over the same period in 2019. While this represents a 5,7% decline, it is no reason to celebrate."
Mbalula's urged motorists to drive safely as we enter the second phase of the peak travel period:
"We expect travel volumes to spike between today (Tuesday) and Thursday, followed by another spike on 31 December. The final peak is expected on 3 and 10 January."
