65% voter turnout in 2019 General Elections

The Nelson Mandela Foundation says the low voter turnout at this year's election - does not paint a promising picture of confidence in our democratic system.

This year's voter turnout is sitting at 65% - the lowest voter turnout since first holding democratic elections in '94 or the more recent ones such as the 2009 elections with a 77% turnout.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation's Sello Hatang says this is worrying.

"We're concerned that at relatively low levels of participation in elections generally in South Africa - this is an important thing that we need to be observing.

"These long queues of 1994 should be something we yearn to bring back. It says something about people having lost hope in democracy. There are many reasons why people didn't come through because we need to bring back those long queues. It is still [about] serving the poor and vulnerable," Hatang said.
