6 people have been left seriously hurt following a collision between a bakkie and a car on the M13 near Everton Road in the Gillits area, last night.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the bakkie left the busy road and rolled down an embankment before coming to rest there. Rescue Care emergency services responded and once they reached the driver at the bottom of the embankment they found he was trapped inside the vehicle. 

The service's Garrith Jamieson says firemen from the Durban Fire Department had also arrived to assist and managed to free the driver.

"The driver of the vehicle was found to be entrapped inside and Rescue Care paramedics together with the Durban Fire Department personnel managed to free the managed to free the man before taking him to the top of the embankment where an ambulance was waiting to transport him to hospital," he said.

"In the second vehicle 5 people sustained serious injuries and were stabilized on scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics before taking them to hospital for the further care they required," Jamieson said. 

"At this stage the cause of the collision is unknown however police were on scene and will be investigating further," he said.
