More than 40 people have been injured when a fully loaded bus left the R56 before crashing, in Rietvlei, north of Harding.
It is not known what caused the bus to leave the road. Among services that responded was KZN EMS. Spokesperson Robert McKenzie says the accident took place in the early hours of today.
He says 5 people died from the crash.
"Paramedics have treated 42 patients at the scene of the crash for various injuries ranging from minor to critical", he said.
"They have all been taken to nearby hospitals for further medical care", McKenzie said.
"The exact cause of the crash is still not known and will be the subject of investigation by police", he said.
