Residents of Dundee and surrounding areas are urged to contact police immediately should they come across any of the five inmates who escaped from the Dundee Correctional Services Centre on Sunday.
Spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department in KZN - Thulani Mdluli says the fugitives were awaiting trial prisoners arrested for crimes including murder, rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The five escapees are Cassim Alijan, Lethukuthula Shabalala, Mondli Gamede, Bonginkosi Sithebe and Bongani Kubheka.
Mdluli says a sixth man was caught on the premises.
He has warned the men are very dangerous.
''It is said that they [made their escape] by cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof of a cell, number 12 before climbing out.
''Thereafter the inmates are said to have jumped through the roof, approximately 3-5 metres high. There is a wired fence for security reasons around the centre,'' he said.
