49% drop in Easter road deaths in KZN
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
There's been a 46% drop in road fatalities across the country over this year's Easter break compared to the same period last year.
This means 156 lives were lost this year compared to 287 in 2015.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has delivered her report on road statistics for the Easter period.
North West province recorded the highest drop in fatalities at 71%, while the Free State saw a 52% decrease. Peters says KZN has been one of the provinces that also saw a significant drop.
"KwaZulu-Natal experienced a drop of 49% with fatalities reduced from 55 last year to 28 this year.
"This sharp decline was achieved inspite of an increase in the number of registered vehicles in the country by 333 226 which translates to 3% increase of the vehicle population," she said.
More than 900 people were arrested for drunk driving over the long weekend.
