SPCA officials in Durban say they will be opening a case against a Clare Estate woman after the carcasses of 40 dogs were discovered in her home.
Working with the police, they raided her property a few days ago. They say the woman and 80 other dogs were found living under one roof. The Society’s Caroline Smith says the animals they rescued were in a bad state which is why many had to be put down.
"Each dog has been individually assessed and a majority of them had to be put down immediately because they were suffering", she said.
"We have taken blood samples of each of them and we will make a further decision early next week", Smith
Unfortunately a lot of them were carrying deseases that were contagious", she said
Smith says the woman told them that she had been bringing unwanted and stray dogs into her home to care for them.
She says pet owners who can not look after their animals anymore, should bring them in to the SPCA.
