3500 jobs at Arcelor Mittal under threat
Updated | By Newswatch
Trade union Solidarity says about 3 500 workers are facing a bleak Christmas as ArcelorMittal closes down three of its long steel mills.

Part-time and permanent employees at operations in Newcastle, Vereeniging and Arcelor Rail and Structures will be affected.

The company is blaming the closures on Eskom's power crisis and high logistics costs.
It also says the decline in local infrastructure development has played a role.
ArcelorMittal today said the implementation plan to scale down has not yet been finalised as consultations still need to take place.
But Solidarity says the company should have consulted with unions and other key players before it made the announcement.
