348 suspects nabbed for KZN political killings - Cele

Over 340 suspects have been charged as part of a clampdown on political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

This is according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
On Wednesday, he shared the findings of an Inter-Ministerial Committee established to probe such killings in the province.

The committee looked into incidents going back to 2018.
"Cases under scrutiny by the team includes 155 cases of murder, 51 of attempted murder, 37 of intimidation, 12 cases of conspiracy to commit murder with 26 other ad hoc cases," he said in Durban.
"Sixty-two suspects have been convicted while 155 are going through the court process. Seventeen arrested suspected have since died during the court process."

Cele said eThekwini and Zululand remain volatile regions that need a special focus in the fight against political killings.
He said problematic areas like hostels are at the heart of the violence.
The minister said there's been more bloodshed among members of the ANC in KZN.
"The most affected political parties are the ANC, IFP and NFP. From the 52 murder cases of councillors 31 ANC councillors were killed, while 13 were IFP and four were NFP, two EFF and one ACDP."
