3 killed in Hilton bakkie crash

Three people have died while 30 others have sustained various injuries after a bakkie they were cramped in left the road and crashed into a tree on the N3, in the Hilton area, in Pietermaritzburg this morning.
It's believed the vehicle veered off the road for about a hundred metres before slamming into the tree with all of its around 30 occupants on board.
Netcare 911 paramedics arrived to find the occupants thrown across the road. The services Chris Botha says emergency services are working to free those trapped in the wreckage.
"When paramedics and emergency services arrived at the scene, they found that six people were still trapped in the wreckage of the bakkie. Three of them tragically died.
"The fire department are still using the Jaws of Life to extricate some of the people trapped. The paramedics are stabilising all the patients and transporting them to various hospitals for further care," he said.
In a separate unrelated incident, Netcare 911 paramedics this morning also rushed out to Inanda Road near the SPCA where on man died and several others were injured after a bakkie and a taxi collided.
Six people sustained serious injuries. When emergency workers arrived they found debris and twisted frames of the vehicles scattered across the road.
It's unclear what caused the accident but police will investigate.
