24 000 new Covid-19 cases in SA, 36 deaths

Thirty-six more people, who contracted Covid-19, have died in the country.

Health officials say this raises the number of lives lost since the start of the outbreak to 90 262. More than 24 500 new cases were picked up in the last 24-hour period, which represent a 30.9% positivity rate. 

 

The pattern around the country remains the same. Gauteng's recorded 27% of these infections - over 5800 were registered in KwaZulu-Natal. Hospital admissions have gone up by 347.

Despite the jump in the coronavirus infection rate and the country entering the fourth wave of Covid-19 cases, the National Coronavirus Command Council says South Africa will remain under level 1 lockdown for now. 

 

Health officials have urged people to adhere to the current pandemic safety rules to prevent a possible surge in infections during the festive season.
