Emergency services say at least 21 people have been killed in multiple crashes in KZN since Friday night.

KZN Emergency Medical Services say the 21st fatality was recorded near Colenso, outside Ladysmith last night.

Spokesperson Robert Mckenzie says a pedestrian was knocked over on the R103.

"These 21 fatalities have been a result of just eight crashes. So sadly we have seen a very high fatality count," he said.

Mckenzie is urging motorists to drive carefully today.

Increased traffic volumes are expected on busy routes as holidaymakers return home after the Heritage Day long weekend.

7 people, including a 3-month-old baby, were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a dam in the Maphumulo area in the Ilembe District yesterday.

"Police and paramedics are on high alert today as we expect high traffic volumes with holidaymakers heading home after the long weekend. Please be cautious on the roads, especially if there is wet and inclement weather," said Mckenzie.

More than 40 fatalities have been recorded on the country's roads this weekend.
