2021 election preparations underway

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says preparations for 2021 local government elections are underway.

IEC Chairperson Glen Mashini has been briefing the Parliament's Home Affairs portfolio committee this morning.


He  says elections must be held within 90 days after the end of the term.


That is between 4th August 2021 to November first. 


KZN has eleven districts, with the eThekwini Municipality the largest in the province.

Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is expected to announce the election date after consulting with the IEC.


"The Minister of COGTA which is the minister responsible for local government is required to proclaim the date in which the 2021 elections will be held following consultations with the electoral commission," said Mashini.


He told the committee that these engagements are in progress between the electoral commission and  Dlamini-Zuma.
