2018 Year in Review: Newswatch Special Report tugs on the heartstrings

One of the hardest hitting Newswatch reports this year came in the form of a Special Report.

Twelve-year-old, Sboniso Hlophe and parents, Siya and Bonisiwe

The 12-year-old boy would watch other children at a nearby school and mimic their timetable.

All this while sitting on a hill overlooking the school grounds.

SPECIAL REPORT: Education out of reach for KZN boy with autism

When the pupils are in the classroom, Sboniso Hlophe sits and 'learns' himself. He takes out old text books and pages through them.

When the children are playing at break, Sboniso sits on a makeshift swing his father hung for him from a tree.

The story generated much interest among East Coast Radio listeners and readers, with many people sharing the story online, commenting about possible routes the family could follow to access formal schooling or offering assistance.

The report also prompted follow-ups form several other media outlets.
