2017 Year in Review: South African icon Joe Mafela killed in Joburg crash

One of the tragic moments of 2017 was the death of legendary South African actor, Joe Mafela.

The 75-year-old was killed in a crash on the M1 in Johannesburg on the 18th of March.

South Africans across the country shared photos, Tweets and social media posts in honour Mafela after the news of his death broke.

He was well-known for his role in popular 90's comedy, Sgudy's Snays, and most recently as Tebogo Moroka on Generations: The Legacy.

During his illustrious career, Mafela received two life-time achievement awards: the Theatre Management Lifetime Achievement in 2005, and the Savanna Comics’ Choice award in 2015.

A memorial service was held for the actor at the Joburg Theatre on the 23rd of March, 2017.
