Paramedics and firefighters say they responded to reports of a fire and arrived to find 12 informal dwellings gutted.
KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie says firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread further.
"It is believed that a woman that is about 53 years old and a man of about 23 years old passed away. It is believed that they were mother and son. The exact cause of the fire is not known at this stage," he said.
Meanwhile in the North West province, two adults and a toddler were burnt to death when their home caught fire on Monday night. Paramedics found the bodies of a man, woman and toddler in the living room after the fire was extinguished.
