2 children drown, 4 missing after flooding in KZN

The child was washed off a low-lying bridge in KwaDukuza on Tuesday. 

Paramedics says the boy had apparently been playing on the bridge with friends when the incident occurred.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst from says his body was on an embankment about a kilometre away from where he went missing. 

"The family members and friends of the victim were still there and obliviously were traumatised. Unfortunately, the body did sustain some injuries coming down the rapid water flow. It was quite emotional for the family," he said.

Earlier today a 10-year-old boy's body was recovered in Tongaat after he drowned. 

Herbst says the search teams are searching for four missing people in KZN, including two people who were swept into the swollen Umvoti River on Wednesday morning. 

Craig Lambinon from the National Sea Rescue Institute is urging people to be careful in these weather conditions.

"Be cautious around swollen rivers, rivers that are higher than normal and do not to cross swollen or flooded rivers."

"This particularly with the weather to deteriorate as forecast by the South African Weather Service on Thursday and Friday in KwaZulu-Natal," he said.
