15-year-old girl allegedly raped after trafficked by own mother

The mother of a
Ladysmith teenager who was allegedly trafficked to Gauteng and raped has been
arrested.

Authorities say the 15-year-old girl's mother arranged for her to go visit a family friend in Johannesburg in December.
The child was apparently told she'd receive a cellphone, clothes and other gifts from the family friend.
Police say the Grade 9 pupil told them her mother's acquaintance in Johannesburg took her to some men who abused her.
The mother's friend is said to have been handed money by the men when they dropped the girl off the following morning.
KZN police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says the teenager was rescued by two girls who helped her return home.
“Her mother was aware and took no action against the preparator. Instead she took a sum of R100 and gave her daughter to silence her. She later formally reported the incident with the SAPS and charges of human trafficking and rape were opened,” Mbele said.
“The investigation led to the arrest of the mother of the victim who is 53-years-old,” Mbele added.
