15% water cuts for Umgungundlovu residents
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The uMgungundlovu District Municipality has implemented 15% water restrictions.
The move comes in light of desperately low dam levels due to the severe drought and hot conditions experienced in parts of the country.
KZN is among the five provinces that have been declared drought disaster areas.
Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee says the restrictions will apply between 9pm and 4am in areas falling under their jurisdiction.
"We are living in a water scarce country - the harsh effects of climate change already being felt. Our annual rainfall is 464ml against a backdrop of a global rainfall of 850ml. Now that puts a huge strain on our growing economy.
"We now have to comply with the national call of trying to implement restrictions," he said.
