1400 people killed on SA roads over festive season

A total of 1 427 people were killed on the country's roads during the latest festive season.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga released the preliminary road stats for the period on Wednesday.
She said there were 1 184 fatal crashes, which is a 2.2% decline compared to 2022/23.
Chikunga said most of the accidents took place between the 1st and 5th of December, with most fatalities reported on Sundays.

“The most crashes took place between 19:00 in the evening and 22:00 in the evening with the peak between 20:00 in the evening and 21:00 in the evening, 40.9% of those who died were pedestrians. Passengers accounted for 33.6%, drivers accounted for 24.6% and cyclist accounted for 0.8%."
"It will be noted very sadly that the majority of those who died were between the ages of 25 and 44."
