11 school employees found guilty of misconduct

Eleven employees in the KZN Department of Education have been sanctioned for misconduct.

The individuals were found guilty following disciplinary proceedings.


Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the final sanctions follow an appeals process


"The misconduct vary from corporal punishment to abuse of transport, abuse of power, instigating learners and so many. As the department of education, it disturbs us to have 11 employees that we had to deal with but at any given point, if they do things that are against the law we will not hesitate to take disciplinary actions." 


The following cases have been brought to book; Five assault cases, two sexual assault cases, one case of instigating learners to rebel.


Locking of school officials and learners (matron: boarding school), absenteeism from school and workshop, one case of an unauthorised school trip, abuse of state vehicle and misinterpretation of legislation, one case.

Meanwhile, a task team has been set up to find a long-term sustainable solution to the persistent problems facing the student financial aid scheme. 


There have been student protests at several institutions in the country over historical debt and registration problems - among other things.


Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande has pleaded with student bodies to not delay the start of the 2021 academic year further.


Spokesperson Ishmail Mnisi says the work will be done collaboratively with all stakeholders. 


"All 26 universities have committed to using several debt relief mechanisms to enable academic students to register and complete their studies without undermining the underlying financial ability of each institution."
