According to Rescue Care the vehicle also knocked over two children aged 6 and 8 who had been on the side of the road. The service's Garrith Jamieson says nothing could be done to save the driver.

"On arrival we found a car had somehow left the road, rolled several times before hitting two children aged 6 and 8. Unfortunately the driver had succumbed to his injuries and nothing could be done to save him. He was declared 'deceased' on scene", he said.

"The two children sustained moderate injuries and were treated on scene. At this stage full details of the accident are unknown but SAPS were on scene to investigate", Jamieson said.

In another unrelated incident that the service also responded to... 4 people were hurt when two vehicles collided head-on along the M19 near Blair Atholl Road in Westville. The occupants were found trapped in the wreckages and Jaws Of Life had to be used to free them.

Advanced Life Support paramedics attended to them. A driver of one of the vehicles had to be airlifted with the use of the Lenmed1 Aeromedical Helicopter.
