Zikalala urges political parties in KZN to work together as coalition talks intensify

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the provincial government will assist with the reconstitution of councils in the province's 21 hung municipalities.

"Cooperative Governance will work with all affected municipalities to reconstitute the councils and facilitate the elections of office bearers,” he said during a media briefing on Monday.
“As per the requirement of the municipal structures act. We have a plan in place to ensure that all the municipalities meet the level that requires them to reconstitute themselves within 14 days after the gazetting of the election result by the Minister of Cogta.
“While we plan to do our best to support and facilitate a smooth transition, we are by no means underestimating the challenges that may arise in the hung municipalities.”

Zikalala made the remarks at a virtual press conference following last week’s local government elections.
He urged the various political parties to work together.
"We trust that parties will continue persuading each other and avoid political theatrics that may end up paralysing municipalities and hamper the delivery of services. No one should drop the baton for it is the very lives of our people which will be at stake if we, as elected representatives waste time instead of finalising this process within the set time.
