"An off-duty Durban policeman has been gunned down in Mpumalanga, near Hammarsdale, just outside of the city. A sergeant with the Durban Flying Squad, he was run off the road by a gang of heavily armed men while on his way home on Friday night", he said.
"Nothing was stolen and national police spokesperson Vishnu Naidu says they are still trying to establish a motive. A member of the Durban Flying Squad was off duty - he was travelling home to Mpumalanga, just outside Hammarsdale - when he was attacked by a group of unknown men travelling in a second vehicle. They shot at his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, down an embankment", Naidu said.
"The suspects fired shots at him, hitting him multiple times and killing him instantly. We have not been able to establish the motive at this stage. The member did not have his State-issued firearm with him so investigations are continuing", he said.
