AFU gets green light to keep hold of R300k in 'drug money'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The NPA's Asset Forfeiture Unit has been granted an order allowing the forfeiting of just over R300 000 in cash.
The money is believed to be proceeds of crime.
The order was granted by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday in a drug-related matter dating back to November 2017 when police conducted a search at an Edendale home.
Mandrax, heroin, crack cocaine and cocaine powder were found with two unemployed suspects unable to account for the money.
NPA spokesperson Natash Kara says the state concluded in its papers that the money is the proceeds of crime and should therefore be forfeited.
"The criminal case returns to Regional Court 4 in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on 18 July 2022.
"The forfeiture order and the concurrent court case is indicative of how the different units within the NPA are working together to actively make sure that crime doesn’t pay and that criminals are brought to justice."
