Oscar winner Viola Davis will play Volumnia Gaul in the new 'Hunger Games' movie. The 57-year-old has joined the high-profile cast of Liongate's upcoming film, 'The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes'. 

The movie is a prequel to the hit franchise which is based on the books by author Suzanne Collins. 

Jennifer Lawrence played Katniss Evergreen in the original movies. The films grossed $3-billion (R49-billion) at the box office.

The prequel is set many years before Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) became president of the Capitol of Panem. English actor Tom Blyth will play the teenage version of the character in the new film. 

Viola joins Rachel Zegler,  'Euphoria' star Hunter Schafer, and 'Game of Thrones' actor Peter Dinklage in the cast.

"Meet your Head Gamemaker. Viola Davis has been cast as Dr. Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - arriving in theaters November 2023," the official 'Hunger Games' Instagram page announced. 

Lionsgate posted: 'See you at the capitol, Viola Davis." 

The prequel is due for release in late 2023.

Viola's fans will get to see her next in 'The Woman King' alongside Pietermaritzburg-born actress Thuso Mbedu. 

They play female warriors from The Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa. 

The movie will premiere on September 16.
