Three things to do during Earth Hour

Three things to do during Earth Hour

We hope you will be joining the millions of people around the world who are taking part in Earth Hour on Saturday, 19 March.

earth

The annual event encourages households to turn off all the power in their home for an hour, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging people to do their part to reduce the consequences of climate change on the earth.

Here in Africa, environmentalists are “using Earth Hour to drive awareness on the impacts of climate change on the continent and the role of people in climate action”.

More than 170 countries around the world are participating in Earth Hour, a WWF campaign, which is now in its tenth year.

Dinner by candlelight

Earth Hour is the perfect excuse to have a romantic dinner with a loved one or family. You will have to prepare your meal and set up the dinner table in advance, but it will definitely be worth the extra effort. There will be no distractions, like people on their phones or the TV playing in the background - which will make for great bonding time.

Star Gazing

Use the time to appreciate what nature has to offer. You can set up a big blanket on the lawn outside, and star gaze. It is a relaxing experience, that will most likely have you and friends reminiscing about childhood memories. If you don’t have a backyard, take a walk to your local park and star gaze there. Be sure not to go alone as a safety measure.

Take a nap

If you don’t have anything to do during Earth Hour, use the opportunity to take a nap before heading out with your friends.  Not only will you feel bright and fresh for a night out on the town when you wake up, but you will also enjoy the benefits of a nap – which includes lowering your stress levels.
