Miss South Africa 2018, Dr Tamaryn Green, and her husband, Ze Nxumalo, recently celebrated their 'Umabo' ceremony - six months after their white wedding

According to the Sunday World, the 'Umabo' is the closing ceremony of a Zulu wedding.

The latest ceremony seemed to cause some confusion among their fans as Tamaryn and Ze had already hosted several other ceremonies, including their Umembeso in October last year.

Aside from their traditional and white weddings - which included three outfit changes, Tamaryn and Ze hosted a few other ceremonies.

The Miss Universe 2018 1st runner-up explained why they had so many ceremonies.

"For those who were wondering, here is a surface-level explanation of the celebrations that Ze & I had. I noticed a few confused comments. As Ze & I come from different cultures, we decided to embrace all traditions and rituals required by both cultures to be married," she wrote on Instagram

The 28-year-old says the western/white wedding celebrations have several traditions.

"In western society, there is traditionally an engagement, followed by a kitchen tea/bachelorette or bachelors, then finally the white wedding."

There are also several traditions and ceremonies that take place before and after a Zulu wedding. Tamaryn says a traditional Zulu wedding is quite different but also has distinctive stages.

"First, a proposal happens and once the girl says yes to the guy's proposal, Lobola negotiations take place. Once lobola has been paid we celebrate Umembeso, where the groom’s representatives come in numbers and gifts are given to the bride’s family & the bride herself. The groom’s family is welcomed to the bride’s home. In this case Paarl. This event announces publicly that the groom & the bride are no longer on the market for anyone," she added.

Once this is completed, the wedding dates are set.

"The white wedding took place in April where Ze & I were officially married in Stellenbosch but the traditional wedding still had to take place and was set for October in Durban, Midlands. Here, there is the slaughtering of cows & sheep to welcome the Makoti(bride). The Nxumalo’s dressed in the traditional clothes, Zulu skins & performed Zulu dancing.  The brides family sings their traditional songs, the brides father hands over his daughter to the grooms family," Tamaryn explained.

She added that the traditional Induna plays the role of marriage officer.

"The girl declares publicly again she loves her husband and the husband the same. Gifts are then distributed to the grooms family = Umabo. The festivities are concluded and the marriage begins," the beauty queen said.
