Rest in Peace Pops: 'Friday' star actor and comedian John Witherspoon dies aged 77

It's a sad day in Hollywood as legendary actor John Witherspoon has passed on - according to a statement by his family.

You may remember him from the 1995 drama/comedy film, Friday. John Witherspoon was one of those actors that had you cracking up each time you watched him.

News surfaced on Wednesday morning that the actor and comedian died peacefully at the age of 77. An official message was posted to the star's official Twitter account.

"It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away. He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you “POPS” always & forever. - The Witherspoon Family," the message read.

In addition to the tons of messages from fans and friends, his son J.D. Witherspoon shared a heartfelt message to his dad on Twitter.

"So...my Dad died today & honestly I’m not sure how to feel. I’m sad, but I’m also happy 4 all the great times we had together. We’d roast each other like homies more than Father & Son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol. Love U Dad...I’ll miss u. - J.D," he tweeted.

Witherspoon is well known for his roles in Friday, Next Friday, as well as Little Man.
