Prince William has called for all those responsible for hurling racial abuse at England players to be held accountable.

He made the comment after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka were subjected to online abuse following the country's Euro 2020 loss.

Italy won the European Championship after a nail-biting penalty shootout on Sunday night. Rashford, Sancho, and Saka - who missed their penality kicks - were blamed for the loss.

Some English football fans called the players "monkeys" and told them to "get out my country".

A mural honouring Rashford for his relief efforts during the COVID-19 was defaced after the match.

Prince William slammed the abuse.

"I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour. It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable," he tweeted.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also condemned the "appalling" attacks.

"This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves."
