Pearl Thusi's heartbreak: 'What I'd do to get a call from them'

The actress woke up on her birthday missing the sound of her father's voice in the most "heartbreaking and wrenching" way.

Celebrating special occasions without your loved ones is heartbreaking, especially when they have passed on.

Pearl Thusi celebrated her 36th birthday this week, and the day was filled with mixed emotions. The 'Queen Sono' actress lost her mother in July 2004. Her father passed away in 2020.

"I woke up and immediately began crying… grateful that my kids are already at school and don’t have to see me like this. But I’m so happy to be feeling. And maybe crying on your birthday is ok —it’s all the love I still have for my parents yearning to be felt by them," she wrote on Instagram.

Pearl usually wakes up on most birthdays feeling "numb", but this year, things are a little different.

'I’m feeling everything… joy, sadness, excitement, love, hope, fears. What I'd do to get a call from them. I miss my dad's voice in a heartbreaking and wrenching way."

Despite the despair she feels because of the loss of her parents, she remains hopeful things will get better.

"I’m still standing, tall and proud, so just in case they see everything- they didn’t die in vain. I won’t lie; it weirdly feels really good to cry," she wrote.

Pearl has also decided to use her birthday as a reminder of the power and love she comes from.

Instead of just saying "Happy birthday to me", she now adds, "Happy bringing a new soul into the planet to my parents."

"Giving birth and raising a child is tough - hope I'm making it worth it... My mom would be proud."

Pearl's parents would indeed be proud. She is raising two beautiful girls while juggling her acting, DJ, and businesswoman career.

Pearl's daughter, Thandolwethu Mokoena, is in high school and speaks fluent French. In 2019, she announced that she had adopted a little girl named Okuhlekonke.

Her parents would also have had a big smile when she took ownership of her new home in 2020.

"Guys. My best friend is incredibly inspiring... Look at this home she just acquired for herself and her babies. So proud of you @PearlThusi," her best friend, DJ Zinhle, wrote on X
