It's been eight years since Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey ended their romance, but the 'Wild N Out' presenter still has his ex-wife on the brain.

The 41-year-old dropped his new single, 'Alone', this week. The three-minute song is an ode to his ex-wife Mariah Carey, according to Nick's team.

The song starts with a sample of Mariah Carey's 1990 classic, 'Love Takes Time'.  The former couple parted ways in 2014 and finalised their divorce two years later.

The lyrics of his new song suggest that he is full of regret over the split and wishes he was back together with the Grammy Award winner.

Nick raps:

First off, I'ma say I ain't got nothing but love for ya
Got nothing but love, I'ma stay away, I ain't tryna f**k it up for ya
I'ma keep my distance, stay in my lane
'Cause I know you got a man, it's a little too late

Mariah is currently dating choreographer Bryan Tanaka.

The song's lyrics surprised Nick's fans as he recently announced that he is preparing for the birth of his eighth child with model Bre Tiesi.

To put things into perspective - Nick is expecting his eighth child with his fifth baby mama. He welcomed four of his children in the space of six months. Three of the children were born within days of each other.

So why now? Nick clarified on his self-titled talk show that he is not trying to get Mariah back because he knows that is "impossible".

Nick says that his new song is about reflection and taking ownership of the fact that he messed up.

“I had probably the greatest situation. I had my dream girl and I messed it up.... The song wasn’t really about trying to get her back. It was taking ownership of what I did as a man and owning my flaws and expressing it through song," he said.

Nick's song also revealed some interesting details about his child support situation.

I'm still all in the sheets
Having babies, models, and singers, and actresses
Saying they pregnant by me
Have to pay ten thousand dollars a week
I take care of my peeps

That's around R150,000 a week if anyone is trying to do the math!
