MacG slammed for taking a swipe at Pearl Thusi's DJ career

"Only a person who is starting to lose touch can make fun of someone trying to find purpose in their life" - Mac G is receiving flak for criticising Pearl Thusi's DJ career...

Social media users are defending actress Pearl Thusi after 'Podcast and Chill' host MacG mocked her for pursuing a career in deejaying.

The 'Queen Sono' actress announced in February that she was venturing into music after finally having the guts to follow a decade-long dream. She got the support of her family and friends, including DJ ZInhle.

"I’ve made a dream come true. Whether this makes sense to you or not… worry about yourself and making your dreams come true. I pray this convinces you to never give up on what you want to achieve," Pearl said.

The 35-year-old admitted that she was worried about what people thought about her decision but was happy that she overcame her fear of judgment.

Enter MacG.

During the latest episode of his podcast, MacG was of the opinion that Pearl is too old to be taking up deejaying.

"How can you start deejaying at 40, bro? From 'Queen Sono' to deejaying. Let's not condone bull**** man," he said.

MacG's co-host, Sol Phenduka, defended Pearl, saying she appears serious about her new passion and likely spent R200,000 on DJ equipment.

"Look, if she is really in love with the music. She even bought equipment... She dropped like R200k or something slightly shy of that, just to buy equipment. I don't know her passion, but if you're in love with it, why not?" he said.

MORE FROM EAST COAST RADIO:

Social media users felt McG's comments were too harsh, with many saying people should be allowed to pursue their passions regardless of their age.

"So at 40, you can't try? A lady started djing at 60," one X user wrote.

Another user added: "I wonder if he had this opinion when he was struggling & trying to find a way back to work, only a person who is starting to lose touch can make fun of someone trying to find purpose in their life. I'm 33 & went back to school & started creating music & art. Is it too late for me?"

A third person commented: "I'm not a fan of Pearl Thusi but MacG was just way out of order."

A fourth X user wrote: "MacG is crossing a line here! We're well aware of how challenging the entertainment industry can be, and there's nothing wrong with exploring other avenues to make ends meet. Would he prefer to see Pearl resorting to asking for donations? This is BS!!"

Pearl is not the only DJ in her 30s and older. Grammy Award-winner DJ Black Coffee is still deejaying at 48. He continues to book gigs all over the world including in Ibiza and Miami.

French DJ and producer David Guetta is 56, while Steve Aoki is still working the decks at 46. Paris Hilton, at 43, is living her best DJ life all over the world.

Pearl Thusi is not the only celebrity to switch careers. Boity Thulo successfully crossed over from TV presenting to rapping in 2018.

Actress Thuli Phongolo kicked off her DJ career in 2017. She, too, experienced backlash from some, but she brushed off the hate and continued doing her thing.

The hate actually resulted in her booking more gigs.

"Hayibo guys, thank you for making me trend… I literally went from 9 gigs this weekend till Monday to 15 gigs, now I have to possibly cut down because of distance. Sibonge bo!" she tweeted in March 2022.
