Eminem's publisher sues Meta for $109 million over copyright

Meta is accused of allowing and encouraging its users to "steal" the rapper's music for their content, "without proper attribution or licene."

Eminem's publisher, Eight Mile Style, has filed a $109 million (R1,9 billion) lawsuit against Meta Platforms over copyright infringement.

Meta owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp,

Eight Mile Style accuses Meta of “unauthorised storage, reproduction and exploitation” related to 243 Eminem songs.

The company owns the publishing rights for songs released by 'The Real Slim Shady' hitmaker from 1995 to 2005.

According to People magazine, Eminem is not linked to the copyright lawsuit.

People magazine reports that the publisher demands $150,000 (R2,665,955) for each song and other monetary damages.

Meta is not the only social media platform to be called out over song use issues.

In 2024, Universal Music Group (UMG) threatened to remove songs from TikTok over payments and licensing terms.

Songs by top artists, including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Drake, were affected.

"The terms of our relationship with TikTok are set by contract, which expires January 31, 2024. In our contract renewal discussions, we have been pressing them on three critical issues—appropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok’s users," the label wrote.

UMG later reached an agreement with TikTok.
