Celebrities pay tribute to Mam’ Winnie Mandela

Mzansi's biggest stars have joined scores of people around the world in paying tribute to "mother of the nation", Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The struggle stalwart's passing on Monday left South Africans in shock as just a few days earlier she was pictured attending a Good Friday church service. 

Mam' Winnie, as she is fondly called, attended the service with her granddaughter Zoleka Mandela. 

"I forgot how long the Good Friday service at church is, over 5hrs ... My Day One and I left the service so hungry, we had to stop and buy roasted corn on the side of the road to eat on route to the house ... Time for our family lunch aka CHEAT DAY MEAL!!!" Zoleka captioned a picture collage with Winnie. 

Mam' Winnie's family confirmed she passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday.

"She died after a long illness‚ for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones," they said in a statement. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa joined mourners outside the 81-year-old's Soweto home on Monday night.

"Many of our people just cannot believe she has departed; they were still glowing in her continued presence and life‚ particularly after she seemed to have gotten over the health challenges that she was going through... As we say in African culture‚ ‘A giant tree has fallen.’ And this is the Winnie Mandela tree that provided shade for the people of SA. For the people who were in the struggle‚ they used to run under this tree for refuge‚ for shade and for security. That is what Winnie Mandela provided for the millions of people in our country. We are sad that this tree has finally fallen," TshisaLIVE quoted him as saying.
