Durban beaches: DA calls for long-term solutions to pollution
The DA has described as re-active efforts by eThekwini Municipality to investigate medical waste dumped at four of the city’s beaches.
The city announced the temporary closure of four beaches yesterday to allow for clean-up operations.

''We need to start looking at preventative measures to stop this from happening in the first place. We need to look at the conditions upstream, how this waste ends up in our rivers and on our beaches.
''We need to start taking punitive measures as opposed to suggestions that we are going to do education campaigns to get people to stop littering. We need to start taking it more seriously,'' he said.
Riley has also criticised the City for its failure to clean up the litter left on beaches following heavy downpours two-weekends ago.
