American rapper and producer, Timbaland, has apologised for disturbing comments he made about Britney Spears.

The 'Apologize' hitmaker joked that Justin Timberlake should have "put a muzzle" on Britney. He made the comments during a recent event in Washington DC.

Timbaland was having a conversation with producer 9th Wonder onstage when an audience member asked him about Britney's controversial new memoir, 'The Woman In Me'.

Britney talks about her relationship with Justin in the book. She revealed that she had an abortion while she was dating Justin

"I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated. But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young," Britney wrote.

Timbaland - who produced Justin's 2002 break-up song 'Cry Me A River', a track allegedly about Britney - did not hold back when it came to his feelings on the book.

“She’s going crazy, right? I wanted to call JT and say, 'Man! You should have put a muzzle on that girl.'”

Timbaland received major flak for his comments online.

"Why do men feel like they can silence women, he’s a weirdo," one Twitter user wrote.

Another user added: "The only thing celebrity men have is the audacity."

Timbaland has since backtracked on his joke. He said sorry to Britney and her fans during an Instagram Live.

"I apologise to the Britney fans and her," he wrote.

Timbaland also responded to a viewer's comment about respecting women.

"Yes, ‘you know about respecting women?’ Hell yeah.”
