The world awoke to the shock news of Chris Cornell's passing on Thursday.

Cornell, who had been a mainstay of the music world since the 1980s, was found dead in Detroit following a show with his band Soundgarden.

The unique talent is credited with being a major influencer on the 90s grunge scene, along with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain.

Cornell formed Soundgarden in 1984, before going on to release albums with Temple Of The Dog and as a solo artist.

In 2001, Cornell teamed up with Rage Against The Machine's musicians to form Audioslave - a juggernaut which would go on to achieve great success for nearly a decade.

As fans of music, we are lucky in the sense that we can still hold onto our heroes even after death. That will most definitely be the case with Cornell, as his memory will live on forever in his music.

Here we list five songs from Cornell which we believe perfectly capture the genius that he was:

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Audioslave - I Am The Highway

Temple Of The Dog - Hunger Strike

Audioslave - Cochise

Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days
